Martha graduated in 2008 with a First Class honours in English Language and Linguistics. During her three year degree she spent a lot of time mentoring and teaching children on various programmes organised through the university and went on to become a teacher of English as a foreign language. Martha joined Explore shortly after this as a Tutor in Clifton Bristol, for six months, before successfully applying to become an Assistant Director in Sydenham.
“I have always had a strong passion for working with children, particularly teaching, building confidence and enthusiasm, so I found the role of Tutor incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. The role was exciting and varied quite early on, I was tutoring and building bonds with the children and families, helping run the 11+ and other additional content courses, running holiday workshops, as well as taking part in some of the marketing events organised by the team. I also ran events within the local community such as with the local brownie packs.
I quickly felt extremely committed to Explore and the supportive, nurturing working environment was one that I thrived in. As my interest in the company grew, I became intrigued by the role of Assistant Director and Centre Director. Whilst I enjoyed my role as a Tutor and I knew that I didn’t want to move away from working with children, I found the many other elements to being an Assistant Director very exciting.
Now as an Assistant Director, I enjoy working closely with the rest of the team whilst also being responsible for my own roles. I still love working with children and helping their confidence and enthusiasm grow, but I also love being part of running a centre; developing my marketing and management skills, contributing to the growth and success of the centre, and never having two days the same!” |
