Assistant Director Case Study
- Claire Green
Claire graduated from the University of Nottingham with a 2:1 degree in Biology. Her interest in education began whilst researching her dissertation, which focused on the advantage of using e-learning and ICT methods in Environmental Education. Following graduation, Claire pursued her passion for conservation and charitable work and took a position as a Recruitment Coordinator for the Society for Environmental Exploration, placing and managing volunteers all over the world on development projects. Claire then decided to embark on a number of projects of her own and lived in Guatemala, The Galapagos Islands and French Polynesia, teaching English to children and adults from 4-23 years.
‘It was the people aspect of the role that first drew me to the Assistant Director position. I have worked in volunteer management and been involved in counselling roles in the past and was keen to develop my skills in management. Getting the best out of our tutor team is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.’
Throughout her time at University Claire volunteered for a variety of organisations. Her role as a RAG representative resulted in the society raising over £500,000 for charity through marketing and fundraising events during the time of her involvement. Claire also provided counselling to students who were making the transition into University and communicated their needs to the Students Union through her role as a Student Liaison Officer.
‘Getting my teeth into the marketing of Explore Learning was something that really excited me when I joined the company. At University, I was a RAG fundraising representative; we travelled the country persuading people to donate their loose change to charity and organised other community and fundraising events. I’m now using these skills to market our centre in a face to face capacity. We often spend days in shopping centres or at community events promoting our services. I am now responsible for external marketing in my centre and I really enjoy investigating different ways of promoting my centre.’
‘I loved being involved in RAG, Student Liaison and Volunteer Management and I was keen to apply and expand my skills learnt in these roles in my career; my position enables me to develop my marketing and sales performance as well as, giving me the opportunity to work closely among, and build important bonds with children and parents. The close knit team I work in provides incredible support and motivation and has fostered my development both personally and professionally. Thanks to their comprehensive training programme and supportive, friendly, working environment I am achieving things above and beyond what I imagined’.
