Assistant Director Case Study
- Thomas Jewell
Tom graduated from the University of Reading with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Sociology. During his three years studying, he became involved with a variety of schemes and clubs; organising balls, heading various committees and volunteering within local primary schools. After taking the opportunity to spend a summer working in an American summer camp, Tom entered his final term at University hungering after a career that encompassed all of the elements he had cherished experiencing during his time there, as well as the desire for opportunities to test his skills in a competitive company.
“Working with children has always appealed to me: who wouldn’t want a career where you’re able to make a real difference to so many people’s futures? However, I also needed a job that gave me real responsibility from an early stage and a true chance to cultivate the basic skills I had learnt from my time at University. When a friend told me to have a look at the Explore Learning website I immediately had fantastic vibes about the company’s rousing ethos, and after a quick visit to check out my local centre I knew this company would be the only one I’d be applying to.
Working for Explore Learning has truly exceeded my initial expectations – the job has drawn directly on so many of my previous experiences: the atmosphere of the centres are as fun, vibrant and inspiring as that of the 10 weeks I spent working at a fantastic underprivileged children’s summer camp in Chicago. The role requires real leadership and teamwork skills, as well as huge responsibility, which paralleled my 3 years spent in various leadership positions of my University Hall’s JCR committee. On top of this, Explore Learning gives me the opportunity to develop brand new skills. I experience face-to-face sales, marketing, management, teaching, finance and recruitment on a day to day basis, to mention but a few.
To be able to inspire children to grow in confidence and aptitude in their school lives, whilst being encouraged and expected to succeed and develop myself by my seniors, makes me enjoy every day working for Explore Learning.”
