Additional Content Courses
Exam Preparation, Tuesday 6.30-7.30pm
Our Exam Preparation course centres on the skills of verbal reasoning, English comprehension, essay writing and maths. The skills taught in this class will be invaluable for all children wishing to sit entrance exams for Newcastle's Grammar Schools. The course can also be tailored for any child wishing to improve upon their exam technique. Exam Preparation is open to all members aged 9-14.
Succeed in Secondary, Wednesday 6.30-7.30pm.
Succeed in Secondary is a course that is designed to help prepare children for life at secondary school and to successfully make the transition from one school to another. It is a great chance for our older members to debate, discuss, present and build confidence for high school and beyond! Succeed in Secondary is for year 5, 6, 7 & 8 members.
Creative Writing, Thursday 7-8pm
This fantastic creative writing course has been designed in conjunction with Explore Learning, Immersive Education and the University of Oxford. Explore Writing is open to all members aged 8-14. This wonderful course allows children to develop descriptive writing, short stories and newspaper articles to name but a few. They are encouraged to use figurative language within their work and build upon skills learnt at school.
Explore Learning and Schools
Explore Learning run free maths and literacy workshops in schools across Newcastle and the surrounding area. We currently work in partnership with 25 primary schools including Kingston Park, GEM's, Canning Street, Newcastle Prep school and Westerhope.
We run a variety of events for all age groups. The workshops are year group specific and are designed to fit with the National Numeracy and Literacy Strategy Objectives for each year.
The literacy events include creative writing, story telling, comprehension and character development and are suitable for year 4 and above. The numeracy workshops range from fun with number bonds and mental maths to problem solving and interpreting data in tables, graphs or charts. These numeracy events are available to all year groups. The workshops all have an element of team work and competition and are based on themes of interest to children such as secret detectives and The Simpsons.
Have we visited your school? If your school would be interested in finding out more about our free workshops or would like to request a booking form please call the Newcastle centre on 0191 2140333.
Open Sessions
Our Newcastle centre holds Open Sessions once a month. These sessions are a fantastic way for our members' parents to come into the centre and see the great progress their children are making. In these sessions the parents have a go at the work and the children become the tutors!
Our next Open Sessions are:
Thursday 18th February 11.00am - 12.30pm

What our parents think...
"The most obvious of things is Noor’s enthusiasm to learn the core knowledge and skills of literacy and numeracy interactively, resulting in increasing confidence and positive attitude towards learning. Noor gives nothing but praise about all staff and has even mentioned some favourites."
Mrs Mariam Tansvi.
"Rory’s ability to concentrate has improved greatly. Things that Rory failed to grasp first time round at school have been worked on at Explore; a great academic and confidence boost. The very fact that he is happy to go to Explore and study says a great deal about the centre."
Mrs Heather Fellows.
‘My child has improved confidence with maths and English, he is generally more confident in himself and enjoys working independently.’
Mrs Stella Siddique.
"My son is more confident working on a computer. He surprises me with his knowledge of sums and reading. He loves collecting the lizard cards, and I am happy as my child is in a safe and caring environment, where staff love to help."
Miss Gemma Dobson.
