Nicola Wilcock

Centre Director - Purley, Surrey

“What I love about Explore Learning is that it not only improves a child’s academic ability, but also creates a positive environment in which learning is fun. I admire the enthusiasm of the tutors and I believe that they are inspiring role models for the children who come here. It is very rewarding to help a child grasp areas of their numeracy and literacy, and it is brilliant to see their confidence blossom.”

Nicola joined Explore Learning after studying at the University of Durham and graduating with an Upper Second Class honours in Theology. She worked as a mentor for young offenders at a secure training unit in County Durham and also volunteered at Bolton Lads and Girls Club, assisting in youth work.

I am so happy to be part of Explore Learning. It is such a fantastic place for children to boost their confidence and reach their full potential in maths and English. I also love how passionate we all are about praising children for their efforts and progress. I find it so rewarding getting to know each child as an individual, and being able to give them the help that they need.   I graduated from the University of Reading in 2011 with an upper second class degree in Psychology. I enjoyed my time at university, and found my course fascinating. I have always been interested in child development, and chose to study child and parent interaction for my dissertation. Before university, I took a gap year and did a round-the-world-trip visiting many different countries. This trip inspired me to travel to Brazil as a volunteer in 2010, where I worked with children in a small slum community. This was a truly inspiring experience, of which I will never forget. I have always known I would work with children as a career, but working with Explore Learning has so far exceeded my expectations! I have a smile on my face morning until evening!

Gabrielle Waring

Assistant Director

“Working at Explore Learning has given me the fantastic opportunity to not only improve our members’ numeracy and literacy skills but also to boost their confidence, increase their motivation and develop a real enthusiasm for learning. It’s really exciting that children of all abilities can visit our centre and work on their own course, designed specifically for them to succeed at school. Explore Learning is such an inspiring place to work and getting to know all our members and watching their progress is so rewarding.” Gabrielle graduated from Durham University in 2011 with a 2:1 in Modern Foreign Languages. As part of her degree, Gabrielle spent a year teaching English in summer camps in Italy, volunteering at a primary school in Austria and tutoring while studying in Spain. During her final year, Gabrielle worked as a Student Ambassador for Durham University, running workshops in local schools. After graduating, she worked for eight months in Germany and returned to England to pursue a career working with children. She enjoys sailing, surfing and skiing.
